By the following month, exactly zero rank. Six weeks after that, your entire domain drops twenty positions across every keyword you had been building toward. You did not just waste the pages. You damaged everything else on the site.
That is the most common programmatic SEO failure mode I see among bootstrapped SaaS founders in 2026. The concept sounds efficient. The execution is almost always spam. And for small sites, the consequences are disproportionately severe.
What is programmatic SEO, and how does it actually work
Programmatic SEO is the practice of generating large numbers of pages from a template and a structured data source. Instead of writing each page individually, you define a page pattern, connect it to a dataset, and let code produce hundreds or thousands of pages at once.
The concept is not new. Tripadvisor has location pages for every hotel, restaurant, and attraction in its database. Zillow has a page for every address. Yelp has a page for every business in every city. The intent test is simple: if you remove the variable from the query, does the remaining query still make sense as a standalone search? Sufficient authority to index at scale. This is the part most programmatic SEO strategy guides skip entirely. Google has a crawl budget -- a finite number of pages it will crawl and index for your domain in a given period. High-authority domains get larger crawl budgets. A DR-70 site can push 10,000 new pages into the index within weeks. When it is spam
